Established by the Georges Lurcy Charitable and Educational Trust in 1981, the lecture has sought to bring to the University of Chicago distinguished European scholars of not only history, literature, and philosophy, but also economics, political science, and jurisprudence. Selection of visiting professors alternates between the divisions of the Humanities and Social Sciences.
