MA/MFA Student Teaching

Most first year Humanities graduate students are not allowed to teach; rather, students are expected to focus on course work. This is especially true of students in our intensive one-year master's programs. Students in our M.A. programs who are interested in pursuing teaching opportunities after completing their degrees should see our Professional Development pages for information about University resources they may find helpful.

M.F.A. students in the Department of Visual Arts (DOVA) are offered the opportunity to serve as studio assistants, either in the undergraduate visual art core courses or in media courses. Studio assistants are similar to course assistants in other departments but have more limited duties. For example, they do not assist with grading. Studio assistants are primarily responsible for preparing class supplies including working materials and readings, setting up AV equipment, and researching exhibitions for field trips.

DOVA also awards two Post-M.F.A. Teaching Fellowships, which offer the possibility of teaching a section of the visual art core course in the year after graduation. Students may also apply to teach their own courses in the University's Graham School of General Studies during summers or after graduation.
