Facilities | Capital Project Development

The Dean's staff includes personnel who oversee and manage work environment issues such as office space, furniture, and building repairs. The facilities team includes Patricia Monaghan (2-2267), Director of Capital Planning and Facilities and Mike Zmija (2-8508), Divisional Facilities Coordinator. For assistance in this area, please refer to the following:

Facilities

Faculty should send all facilities requests to their departmental or other unit coordinator. Then, depending on the nature and urgency of the request, the staff member should either

  • submit a work request directly to Facilities Services either by e-mail to work-center@listhost.uchicago.edu for routine requests (e.g., burnt-out light bulbs), or by phone at 834-1414 for emergencies (e.g., flooding or temperature control problems. If problems are not resolved in a timely manner, forward the request to humdiv-facilities@uchicago.edu; and Humanities Division facilities staff will work with Facilities Services to resolve them.
  • send an e-mail to humdiv-facilities@uchicago.edu for more complicated requests (e.g., carpet replacement) or service-related requests (e.g., upgrades in custodial care) so the Humanities Division facilities staff can process the order and coordinate the work.

Important facilities related notices are posted to the HumAdmin listserve and the Faculty and Staff calendar.

Capital Project Development

Fulfilling particular academic needs frequently requires making changes in the University's physical plant. Whether it is renovating a classroom, renovating an office, or purchasing major audio-visual or other types of equipment, a need of this kind is addressed through the capital project development process. Faculty members can propose, develop, and request funding for capital projects by contacting their department chairs. The department chairs may forward requests to the Director of Capital Planning and Facilities at any time. In addition, each summer the director will request proposals from department chairs. Large capital requests for which the division will need to request central funding are sent to the Provost in October. These requests are for the following fiscal year, e.g., requests submitted in October 2008 will be for fiscal year 2009-10. All capital project proposals are reviewed by the Dean. The Dean approves projects to be funded by the division and forwards requests for central funding to the Provost's Office in October. The Provost generally announces central funding awards in June.
