The general Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required for admission to all programs in the Division of the Humanities except the Department of Visual Arts (DOVA). The Division does not require a minimum GRE score or grade point average to consider an applicant for admission.
We strongly advise you to self-report your GRE scores in the online application and/or provide a photocopy of your GRE scores with your supplementary packet so that your application can be reviewed while we await the official required copy. You must also contact ETS and request that the official score be sent directly the University of Chicago, using our institution code of 1832. Be sure to include the four-digit ETS code for the academic department to which you are applying. GRE scores are valid from the 5 years prior to the application deadline.
In addition to the GRE, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the test administered by the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required of all foreign students. Domestic applicants whose native language is not English and who have not attended schools where instruction is in English may also be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. The English language requirement may be waived if the applicant is a native of or studied in full-time status for at least one academic year within the last five years in the U.S., the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or English medium universities in Canada or South Africa. Students who studied in English in other countries (e.g., India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore) are not exempt from taking the TOEFL or IELTS.
