The online application for all programs in the Division of the Humanities for the 2009-10 academic year is now open. The deadlines for RECEIPT of complete applications (both the online application and the supplemental materials) for admission in 2009-10 are as follows:
Master of Arts in Latin American Studies: December 28, 2008
Master of Arts in Middle Eastern Studies: December 28, 2008
All other programs: December 15, 2008

In addition to the general application completed online, you submit the following supplementary packet:

  • Three letters of recommendation (if not submitted electronically)
  • Official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions previously attended
  • 15-20 page writing sample
  • Personal statement (if not submitted online in the general application)
  • Official copies of GRE and/or TOEFL/IELTS scores ordered by the applicant and sent directly to the University of Chicago by the testing service
  • Photocopies of GRE and/or TOEFL/IELTS scores (or provide scores in the online application) are also recommended
  • $55 application fee (if not submitted online by credit card)

If you are applying to the Department of Visual Arts, complete the general online application and submit the following supplementary packet:

  • Three letters of recommendation (if not submitted electronically)
  • Official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions previously attended
  • Artist's statement: a one or two-page artist's statement illuminating the artistic practice by discussion of such questions as sources of influence, character of the inquiry, and some suggestion of future directions the candidate wishes to explore (if not submitted online in the general application).
  • Portfolio: please submit twenty digital images (JPEGs) on CD or DVD. Alternatively, students who work in time-based media may send a selection of work on DVD. All CDs and DVDs must be labeled with the candidate's name and should be accompanied by an image identification sheet that includes the applicant name, the medium, the size or running time, and the date the piece was completed.
  • A self-addressed, postage prepaid envelope if you want portfolio materials returned (which occurs after decisions have been mailed)
  • $55 application fee (if not submitted online by credit card)

To expedite the processing of your application, mail all elements of the supplementary packet together rather than submitting them piecemeal. Do not send any materials directly to the program to which you are applying — this will seriously delay the processing of your application. We recommend that you request transcripts and give recommenders adequate time to write supporting letters in order to ensure that your supporting documents are ready well before the December deadline. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of materials received in our office at the time of the regular review period. Late applications (i.e., applications received after the deadline) will be considered only as long as places are available in the relevant programs. Financial aid (other than loans) is not available for late applicants.

Mail the supplementary packet to the following address:

Office of the Dean of Students
Division of the Humanities
The University of Chicago
1115 E. 58th Street
Walker Museum, Suite 111
Chicago, IL 60637

To check the status of your submitted application, log-in to the application and a notice will indicate which materials have been received. After December 1, the volume of materials we receive prevents us from acknowledging materials on a daily basis. All application materials received by the deadline will be acknowledged by January 5.
