Student Employment
Division of the Humanities Graduate Student Employment Policy
Graduate students at the University are expected to devote full attention and effort to their graduate studies. As such, graduate students in the Division of the Humanities who are registered full-time may not work for the University more than twenty 20 hours per week, including teaching and research appointments, in accordance with the University student employment policy. Full-time employment is not allowed while students are enrolled in our degree programs.
There are no limits on employment in the summer if the student is not registered in the Summer quarter.
International students in F-1 or J-1 status are limited by visa requirements to (20) hours/week of on-campus work during the Academic Year.
Fellowship terms that prohibit or limit employment to less that twenty hours/week supersede the Division’s employment policy.
Student Teaching Roles and Hours
Beginning in Summer 2023, students who are fulfilling pedagogical training requirements will fall under one of three roles for graduate students, and these role types replace all other titles currently being used and will be the only ones allowed for student teaching/pedagogical training. Students who are undertaking pedagogical training assignments will be called either a Graduate Student Lecturer, Preceptor, or Graduate Student - TA (which encompasses all other previous roles including Course Assistant, Writing Intern, Language Assistant, Language Mentor).
All roles, regardless of title, will be assigned a nominal 10 hours/week in the system.
Note that students who hold Resident Head (RH) positions at 20 hours/week cannot take on any teaching during the time of RH employment.
Note that MA students cannot typically hold lecturer positions in which there are other graduate students present. MA students, if asked to TA and should they have permission of their department, cannot assess or grade the coursework of other graduate students in that class. Likewise, PhD students cannot typically hold lecturer positions in which there are other PhD students present.
