Renowned French film director and visual artist Agnès Varda will spend Oct. 8 to 15 in residence at the University of Chicago as part of a major weeklong celebration of her work.
Philippe Desan, Howard L. Willett Professor in Romance Languages and Literatures, History of Culture, and the College, has been honored by the Académie Française with its Grand Prix du Rayonnement de la langue et de la littérature françaises.
Martha C. Nussbaum, the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics, has been awarded the 2015 Inamori Ethics Prize by the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence at Case Western Reserve University. The annual prize, which will be presented to Nussbaum at a ceremony in October, honors an individual “who has demonstrated exemplary ethical leadership” and “whose actions and influence have greatly improved the condition of humankind.”
Five faculty members and two graduate students in the Division of the Humanities have been honored for their commitment to excellence in scholarship, pedagogy, and student mentoring. The recipients will be recognized at ceremonies during the 523rd Convocation on 13 June.
