Visit by William Kentridge Celebrates Launch of Neubauer Collegium
In honor of the launch of the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society at the University of Chicago, internationally acclaimed South African artist William Kentridge will deliver a public lecture. The Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society is an ambitious initiative launched by the Division of the Humanities and the Division of the Social Sciences designed to expand the boundaries of humanistic inquiry and focus resources on questions that transcend any single individual, discipline, or methodology.
In fitting tribute to the cross-disciplinary mission of the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society, Mr. Kentridge will be accompanied by special guests from Lyric Opera of Chicago's Ryan Opera Center as he speaks on the practice and theory of making meaning in the studio through an exploration of the relationship of sound and image. The lecture will focus on a current project, Schubert’s song cycle, "Winterreise," for which Mr. Kentridge is making films to be performed at the Vienna Festival next year. He will be joined by pianist Craig Terry, music director of the Lyric Opera of Chicago's Ryan Opera Center, and tenor John Irvin.
The event will take place at Mandel Hall (1131 East 57th Street) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Seating will be on a first come basis, with doors opening at 5:15pm. Registration is not required but is recommended—register here.
