W.J.T. Mitchell, the Gaylord Donnelley Distinguished Service Professor in English and Art History as well as Editor of Critical Inquiry, was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society (APS).

“This is indeed a great honor, and it feels uncannily perfect, since the APS was the first association that ever provided financial support for my research. I could not have begun my scholarly career without the APS, and it is very sweet to be recognized by them in these late stages,” said Mitchell.

The oldest learned society in the nation, the American Philosophical Society honors extraordinary accomplishments in all fields. Members include the top scholars from a variety of academic disciplines.
